Earn vs. Entitle

To earn is to receive something or make worthy in return for work, effort or commitment. To be entitled is to receive something by right, endorsement or condition. Perceptions as to whether an individual has earned or is entitled to something are highly subjective. Consider the following examples.

I earned a promotion.
I am entitled to a promotion.

I earned my social security check.
I am entitled to my social security check.

Simply stated, was the entitlement earned?
